Melrose Sevens-Hammies takes Title

HAMILTON became the 2010 winners of the Melrose Sevens on Saturday after an exciting display of fast running rugby. Thousands gathered at The Greenyards on what was the hottest day of the year so far and the action on the field sizzled as a compliment.

One by one the Borders teams dropped out of contention leaving South African guest sides University of Johannesburg and Hamiltons to lock horns in the final for a Southern Hemisphere show down. In a pulsating match it was Johannesburgs Lola Waka who started the scoring after two minutes with Derick Badenhorst adding another five pointer just seconds later. Earl Lewis converted both. Hamilton came back in kind with Gerhard Vos and Alshaun Bock running over the line and Jason de Villiers making the conversions. Hamilton crossed again with Terry Jacobs doing the honours but Galashiels referee Ian Heard disallowed the try after spotting a double movement. No sooner had that been decided then the ball was back down the other end of the field with Lewis making the running before Waka ran in for his second. Lewis converted making the half time score 21-14 in favour of the University side.

Unsurprisingly the pace was slightly slower in the second half and it took three minutes for the first score. Bock again was the scorer for Hamilton with Jacobs converting, tying the scores.
Johannesburg were having none of it however and when that man Lewis got the ball again he sprinted half the length of the park before passing to Waka to touch down.

The show went on and a neat flip pass from Jandre du Plessis was collected by Vos who scored under the posts. Jacobs converted and Hamilton went in front for the first time in the game. With time running out both teams strove for a second wind to clinch the honours and it was Cape Town side Hamilton who did it with De Villiers touching down and Jacobs converting to put his team in possession of the Ladies Cup for the first time ever.

Best for the Borders were Selkirk and Melrose who made it through to the quarter-final stages before being ousted by Johannesburg and Hamilton respectively.
