The Old Crocs hosted the Old Northamptonians from England last Wednesday evening at Hammies, with at least a full match 22 and a number of supporters. For most of the match, the Crocks handling was shocking, a blind Sri Lankan U13 girls team could have held on and distributed the pill better than us.
Prior to the match, the easily bribable referee Wayne Jackson was allegedly offered a date with one of the pretty blonde English phyios if he blew in Old Northamptonians favour. Jackson, not to be denied this generous offer, punished the Old Crocks with endless penalties, some legitimate, others perhaps imagined. All joking aside, Wayne knew the Old Northamptonians were outmatched and tried to even things out a bit with the whistle, and let the northern boys have a crack.
In the end, the Crocks ran away 16 tries to 3 winners. For the Old Crocks, Man of the Match honours went to flanker, Denton Blomquist. Flyhalf, Steve Ray, was voted runner-up (though it is rumoured Ray may have offered a bribe of his own for the vote). The Sammy Sure Grip Award went to Andrew Wannenburg. Our French connection, Matthieu Pierre and Christopher, were particularly happy with the score line against Les Rosbifs.
The aftermatch event was loads of fun. One of the Old Northamptonians brought along his guitar and treated us to some excellent oldies but goodies tunes in the club house. After a few beers (and some initial awkwardness from the Crocks), everyone joined in the singing. Apparently the melodious Englishman could give 1st team prop and South African Idol hopeful, Tiaan de Kock, a run for his money.
Senior players Christo McNish, Steph Schreuder and Cassie Juke Box Lotter were on hand to witness the Old Crocks in action, both on the field and at the bar. The old timers showed these young okes what it means to party, and what Old Crock spirit is all about.
A special thanks to Mike Stakemire, and his kitchen and bar staff, for hosting us. A big thanks also goes to Moira who got the blood flowing in our creaky bodies with a very professional warm-up.
Bruce Little The Judge Memorial Dynamiters Derby fixture took place despite both clubs battling to find players, largely due to the long weekend. What would a Derby Day be without the oldies tearing into each other? The game itself was fairly low key, though some scintillating tries were scored by both sides, but more so by the Dynamiters who gave the ball air at every opportunity.
The Villagers Golden Oldies showed great spirit and also tried to keep ball in hand as much as possible, but the greater depth, skill and lower average age which the Dynamiters possessed were always going to tell, and in the end the score was an emphatic 9 tries to 3 in favour of the home side.
The only (minor) negative over the weekend was the fact that we relinquished the Bob Wilkinson/Jomo King memorial shield for the first time to a young-ish and highly motivated Pirates Madalas side. Thanks to a no-show from a number of JHB guest players, we had only 13 players, and so a rugby league like contest ensued. We had no reserves, whilst the Rats had at least 20 players including a sprinkling of former provincial players, Howard Johnson, Ryan Neyt and Falcons prop Gunder Williamson, all played
We were down 3-2 at halftime and our two tries were scored by the electrically pacy Vlokkie, one of our own younger players borrowed from the Hams 2nd XV. Without any subs we started to battle at the beginning of the second half, and Pirates scored two tries to seemingly go out of sight at 5-2. We then lost a player to injury, ironically our one and only JHB invitee who pitched, Eddie Lessing from Motorite! Eddie had not played for 12 years, and put in a major effort for us, but he took a nasty hit and broke two ribs, down to 12 players now!
Then, not too dissimilarly to our seconds a few weeks ago vs UCT, this seemed to galvanise the Hammies spirit, and Shaun de Jager scored a great try after taking a neatly timed inside pass from the timeless Duke Berry. The Dynamiters sensed something and went sweeping onto attack again with a serious of effective driving mauls, Tuck Box Gav Pfister and Faan Muller at the forefront. The Rats were constantly coming in from the side, and the ref was not strict enough on this, we should have had a lot more penalties. Mitch was over the line but could not dot down, as he was held up by three Rats players. 6 minutes to go and the Dynamiters were camping on the Rats line, all 12 of us!! Alas, a scuffle (brawl?) broke out, the weak ref decided enough was enough, game called off, game over (insert coin). 5-3 The final score
So the Rats can have the shield for a year, they come down here next year, and I hope most of you will be part of the campaign to wrest it back!!
