Two Saturdays ago, the Hammies 4th team played at UCT for the second week in a row for the last game of the season. With excitement and some sadness, the players got together before the game to prepare themselves.
We did not start off well with two intercept tries in the first 10 min, but that did not affect the Hammies side. The players pulled together and started to gel with the six newcomers that helped us out. We then started to play with some structure and some dignity. The forwards took the ball upfront and score the first try from a pick up and go.
This try made a spark and from the half kick-off we played the same pattern for almost all the second half. This drained the pack as half were players that helped us out. At the end this took its toll and the students ran us from one side to the other and scored some good tries.
The season ended in a hard and fast game. Thanks to the players who stuck with Hammies for a tough and long season and we appreciate it tremendously. Good luck to the rest of the club, for the remainder of the season and we will be there to support you every game.
Man of the Match: Marco Hambly. Biggest Hit: Cobus Roos
Try for Hammies: David van der Brock 1
The season is coming to an end as our 4th side played its second last game of the season against UCT 4th side. It was a brutal encounter with the Hammies forward pack having the upper hand over the smaller UCT pack. UCT drew first blood by scoring a soft try between our centre pairing. Hammies replied through Stephen du Toit scoring off a good maul in the corner.
As halftime approached the score was 7-10 to UCT. With UCT scoring their second try of the match Hammies player Dell Bousfield replied with an excellent try bouncing off the UCT players. At that stage the score was 14-17 UCT with 15 min to play.
Biggest Hit of the match goes to Dell Bousfield for hitting the UCT centre with a crunching tackle almost folding the opposition player in half.
UCT scored 2 tries in the last 15 min of the game to clinch the game. I am very proud of my boys playing a hard game. SA Rugby Magazine Man of the Match goes to Edwin The Titan who had a massive game on defence and attack. Unluckily, Hammies did not win the match but there is one more to go let us hope for the best and let us come back with a massive last match.
Tries for Hammies: Stephen du Toit 1, Del Bousfield 1
Conversions: Andre van Vuuren 2
The Hammies 4th side was beaten by a very good and big Tech-Gardens side. The night started with the wind blowing furiously over the field with the sand that follows.
This made it difficult to get the ball to the wings and to get the jumpers in the line-outs. We started off by attacking the Gardens try line and setting up some good solid phases. We then opted for a poor kick in the opposition 22 and they went scoring from there with some good handling and communication.
The Hammies side pulled together and kept on going at the Gardens team. But it was not the best out of the side. We started to feel the pain of defending and rucking all the time. This led to a couple of soft tries for the Wolfpack.
The amount of talent we have in the 4th side is tremendous, but with rotations and injuries and all the obstacles, this side is just unlucky.
The Hammies 4th Team started the night with 9 players who had not played for us previously this year. This made the task of winning so much more difficult. We knew going to Durb-Bell was never going to be an easy or pleasant game. The game started with a try for Durb-Bell within the first 5 minutes. But the Hammies players pulled together and started to play some rugby.
With all the new and young players in the team it looked like the game was going to turn around, but with the perfect and very good running lines from the Durb-Bell side it started to become difficult. With Hammies defending almost for 60 minutes you must take your hat off to a last minute team. The score doesnt always tell the story of the game.
I am proud of the players for playing under the circumstances and still show that they can fight until the game ends.
There was no Man of the Match and we did not decide on the Biggest Hit as it was too difficult to decide between the 19 players that tackled the entire game.
The week did not start off well with the high number of players who were sick and injured. This was going to test the players ability to play out of position and out of their comfort zone.
As Friday night arrived, the traffic did not do us any favours, which meant that we did our warm-up with only half the team. The warm-up dictates the way the players are going to play the game, well, with only half of the team there it was going to be a long night.
The team played with good structure and was following the game plan. The Hammies team looked like this was going to be the win they needed. Then we started to make basic mistakes, with handling error after handling error.
This led to frustration amongst the players and massive negativity in the team. It made it all the easier for False Bay and became more of a challenge for us. The players luckily used that frustration in rucking and tackling.
This is a game that the 4th team will want to forget. And I think we can turn this into a lesson and fix it in the next match.
SA Rugby Magazine Man of the Match: Phumelela Njoli
Biggest Hit: Yazeed Osman
Hammies 4th team was off for three weeks and with all of the injuries it was always going to be difficult to beat the men from Durb-Bell.
Durb-Bell started with a try and it did not look too good for the Hammies side, but the players showed their character by hitting back with some hard tackles and some good rucking. The communication between the forwards and the backs was the best of the season, and this allowed us to work as a team and getting the opposition on the back foot.
With flyhalf, Hilton, putting in a nice chip over the oppositions backline, we then went to score a good and impressive try by the 8th man, Dall. The backline had some good runs and had a couple of overlaps, but due to all the time off and injuries we lacked in handling.
The score does not tell the whole story. I am very proud of the players for sticking it out when we needed them the most.
Tries for Hammies: Dall
SA Rugby Magazine Man of the Match: Dall
This was a match that Hammies lost on their own. Hammies players arrived at our home ground too relaxed.
As the game started, it was obvious what Goodwoods game plan was. They tried to avoid the messiness of the rucks by quickly off-loading at every tackle. This made it difficult to defend or to get a hand on the ball. This tactic forced us to defend closer to the rucks and it created an overlap for the opposition that lead to a soft try for the Goodwood side.
But the game turned as Celestian Windvogel intercepted one of their off loads, and ran almost 80m to score under the poles. The Hammies side now looked more alive as we started to maul and ruck Goodwood to pieces. With the forwards doing the hard work up front and the backs running with the ball, Hammies finally began to look like a unit. With prop, Frank McNish, giving a brilliant pass to winger, Chris Jenner, we got ahead of the Goodwood side. As the second half started, Hammies was back to defending and did so almost the entire 40 minutes. This tired out the players and the subs were very welcome on the field. With players like Matthieu Frenchie Pierre and Johan Cornelissen tackling Goodwood apart with big hits and good running, we scored another try.
This wasnt enough to beat the Goodwood side. This was the hardest game we have played this season. And I am proud to say that the team is picking up their game and starting to gel more and more. SA Rugby Magazine Man of the Match went to Dall. Biggest Hit of the match goes to Tyson van Bonde
Tries for Hammies:
Chris Jenner 2, Celestian Windvogel 1
Conversions: Rodrigo 2
The Hammies 4th team arrived at Brackenfell Rugby Club knowing that this would be our biggest challenge to date. The preparation through the week was good and the players were in a winning mood.
With centre pairing, Leonardo Errera and Shaun de Jager, next to each other, the backline looked very promising. We started the game by running the ball and spreading Brackenfells defence.
With the forwards doing the hard yards and the backline the running, it looked like we were going the put 5 points in the bag. We then started to defend phase after phase. And with Brackenfells pack almost double our size it was not easy.
The opposition tried to go wide, but with new kid, Jaen de Goede, and Felix Sauvage cutting them off every single time, they needed to go back to playing with their forwards. The forwards needed to tackle the whole time and did not do the backline any favours. The Hammies side defended almost the entire game and did well on defence.
After an incident where we tackled the player out and the assistant referee did not raise his flag, this was a turning point in the match. After halftime, the same incident happened with the same assistant referee. This set the team back. Our Captain tried to speak to the ref but he would not listen.
The lesson that we learnt out of the game was the fact that you need to adapt and improvise when it comes to refereeing on the day.
Biggest Hit of the Match and Man of the Match goes to Felix Sauvage
Penalty: Leo Errera 1
The first half was a nightmare with Hammies making error after error. They players got more and more aggravated with the referee who seemed to blow two sets of laws.
The Titans Captain, France, then got the guys together and spoke sternly to them. After that, things started turning around with the forwards starting to clean at the rucks and produce good, fast ball for the back line.
The 9 and 10 combination also started to gel. This resulted in a nightmare for the NNK team. The backline started to run in all directions and opened up gaps in NNKs defence.
This Hamilton 4th team finally started to play as a team that wanted to win the league. We could not decide on a Man of the Match because we decided that it was a team effort.
This game was a good indication of the character that lays in the Hammies 4th team.
Tries for Hammies: Roderigo Ruben 1, Santiago di Meo 1, Lorenzo Rossouw 1, Ryan Draver 1
Conversion: Roderigo Ruben 1
This was a match in which the Hamilton team could not get going. The forwards struggled through the game with the line outs and the rucks. Two or three balls were moved down the back line, but never reached the wing. Hamiltons scrummy, Dean Cottle, earned himself SA Rugby Magazines Man of the Match by playing a good game under huge pressure, and scored both of Hamilton tries. With 5 minutes left on the clock, the opposition scored a try to make their score 11 with Hammies 7. The conversion was controversial when the referee first accepted that it was over, but then reverted his call to a miss when there was confusion between the linesmen. From the kick-off, Hamilton scrummy scored in the corner. The opposition appealed from the time of the conversion until the end of the game about the referee reverting his decision on the conversion. The referee finally reverted the result of the kick again after he consulted with the linesman. Then the two points were added to the Goodwood teams score, giving them the win.
Final score: 12-13
Tries for Hammies: Dean Cottle 2
Conversion: Leonardo Errera
Hammies hosted Villager on a windy Saturday afternoon despite the absence of some players due to flu. It was a much improved performance from the 4ths. Hammies had a good international mix with players from the UK and Belgium. The forwards made sure the ball was played wide when required, and kept the ball when needed.
Within 4 minutes of the opening half, Captain Denver Keytle scored his teams first try. Fly half David Herbert converted in strong wind. WP Nel scored another try, converted by Herbert, making the half time score 14-5 in favour of the home side.
The Belgian U20 player, Felix Sauvage showed the senior players how to hunt for the ball and make first time tackles. He had an outstanding game which earned him Man of the Match.
Hammies third try came midway through the 2nd half when Ryan Draver scored in the corner when the ball was moved through the hands of the backs.
It was another very entertaining game with good play from both teams.
Final score: 22-10
Tries for Hammies:
Denver Keytel 1, WP Nel 1, Ryan Draver 1, David Herbert 2 conversions, 1 penalty.
The 4ths took the field on a blisteringly hot afternoon against a determined and scrappy Villager side.
Although Coach Venter observed some positive aspects from his players, Hammies failed to switch on at the beginning which led to a break-down in basic play. Rucking and counter rucking are sure to be two areas of the game which need improvement, and are surely to be emphasised in upcoming training sessions.
Hammies scrummaging left a lot to be desired as Villager were awarded a number of free kicks because our boys did not adhere to the referees engage command. According to Coach Venter, both front rows had been briefed on prior to kick-off so this should not have been an issue. This also meant that much of the game was wasted on re-setting scrums, which often ended with free kicks to Villager.
Hammies spent most of the match defending with only about 30 percent possession of the pill. Our defence held until late in the second half when a Villager chip and chase resulted in their number 14 collecting the ball and dotting down for the winning try.
Hammies lineouts ranged from average to poor. The hooker and his jumpers never gelled, which meant that we were only able to clumsily tap back balls, often resulting in loss of possession.
On a positive note, two Hammies players broke the opposition line on different occasions, and looked very dangerous. Had there been proper support for these runners these linebreaks could have resulted in tries.
Coach Venter believes that the players will have learned from the experience and will work hard to get on track.
Try for Hammies:
A. Osman
Conversions: D. Herbert 1
Penalties: D. Herbert 3
Final score: 21-16 to Villager
It was a bit warmer than expected and we knew the game we were targeting for a 5-point-haul was going to be a tough one, stamina-wise. We went into the game slightly short on forward back-up due to some freak injuries and knew we had to work extra hard.
However, we started off well with a penalty in the first minute by flyhalf, Kylen Stone. Leo Errerra followed up soon after with a magical near-50m drop goal (actually it was only about 25m, but good nonetheless). We scrummed hard and challenged the lineouts, but UCTs first-phase possession was good.
Late in the first half we had some great surges, but also some ill-discipline and suffered 2 yellow cards from test referee turned coach, Eugene Daniels. We scored 3 great tries and went into the hut (on the field) 27-0 up. However, we were still short that crucial 4-try bonus point.
We came out firing in the 2nd half, but so did UCT. They camped on our tryline for what seemed an eternity, but the tenacity and skill shown by the team on defence was a tribute to the hard work put in during the week and has become a hallmark of this dedicated team.
Luckily we managed to break the stranglehold and score 2 more tries and bag a bonus point. More importantly, the team showed great character to keep a clean sheet and the final score was 37-0. Man of the Match: Kylen Stone.
Tries: Fabian Rivalland (1), Leo Errerra (2), Simon Venter (1), Lawrence August (1)
Penalty: Kylen Stone: (1)
Drop goals: Leo Errerra (1)
The game started off well with everyone in good spirits, and contrary to popular belief, a full team with a few reserves to boot.
Wind was blowing slightly in favour of Durbies in the first half and we struggled to match them upfront in the scrums, and conceded a few silly penalties to let them take the lead with a penalty. They also scored a kick-and-chase try which we were not able to stop.
However, in the second half, the 4th sides character really came through and we showed that we are contenders and really have big-match temperament. We used the wind to our advantage and broke the line more often with our centres. Fabian Rivalland had a stormer from the back and was rewarded with a try and an excellent penalty using the wind very cleverly. Lorenzo Rossouw had some barnstorming runs and linked up well with the centres and half-back pairing.
All-in-all a good performance and after-match session for the 4ths. Really flying the flag well for Hammies at away matches. An 11-11 draw was a fair reflection of the game.
Tries: Fabian Rivalland
Penalties: Leo Errerra, Fabian Rivalland
